Justin Timberlake vs. Mary J. Blige

“Suit & Tie” (Justin Timberlake, 2013)

“Crazy Games” (Mary J. Blige, 1991)

(suggested by Spencer)

As Spencer says: ‘The hook for Justin Timberlake’s “Suit & Tie” is just the hook from Mary J. Blige’s “Crazy Games,” only slightly sped up and with one or two notes different at the end of each line. The first time I heard Suit & Tie, on SNL, I was certain it was a cover, sample, or homage. As far as I can tell — nope.’

As far as I can tell, too. “Suit & Tie” even has a Wikipedia entry already, which doesn’t mention “Crazy Games at all:

According to Timberlake: “The inspiration for this really came out of the blue and to be honest, I didn’t expect anything out of it. I just went into the studio and started playing around with some sounds and songs. It was probably the best time I’ve had in my career… Just creating with no rules and/or end goal in mind and really enjoying the process.”

Ironically, Timberlake’s single seems to have protected Blige’s record for the longest-running R&B #1 by finally knocking out Rihanna’s “Diamonds.”
